
I appeared at a Times Plus event to explain why I left the Labour Party, helped to set up The Independent Group, and the impact that Brexit would have on communities like mine in Streatham.
The Streatham constituency contains the southern part of Brixton. It has a longstanding reputation as a vibrant cultural and creative hub, and has also seen significant transformation and investment. Windrush Square is named after the Windrush generation – who settled in Brixton after arriving in the UK as it had the labour exchange which was closest to the accommodation provided to migrants in Clapham – and is home of the Black Cultural Archives.

Given the repeated failure to pass her deal, I asked the Prime Minister to commit to enacting Parliament’s will on Brexit, even if it meant holding a People’s Vote. She refused to do so.
My Change UK colleagues and I teamed up with the Liberal Democrats to table an amendment that would have forced the government to hold a People’s Vote on Brexit.

It was a privilege to be able to visit the Gaia Centre today, who do incredible work supporting victims of domestic violence across Lambeth. We have one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the country, and Gaia are a model for how such services are run across the UK.
I joined Lambeth in Europe outside Waterloo station reminding people to join the People’s Vote March and call on government to give the people the opportunity to stay in the EU!

The Independent Group and I tabled an amendment to May’s deal that would provide for indicative votes in Parliament on Brexit options, and an extension to Article 50 long enough to hold a People’s Vote.
