What I do

Brixton

The Streatham constituency contains the southern part of Brixton. It has a longstanding reputation as a vibrant cultural and creative hub, and has also seen significant transformation and investment. Windrush Square is named after the Windrush generation – who settled in Brixton after arriving in the UK as it had the labour exchange which was closest to the accommodation provided to migrants in Clapham – and is home of the Black Cultural Archives.

Holy Trinity School Visit

I visited Holy Trinity Primary school to talk to the school council about issues such as youth violence and inequality. Violence is having an impact on kids of all ages in our community.

Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe EDM

I signed EDM 2521 condemning the Iranian government for continuing to hold Ms Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe in arbitrary detention, and expressing solidarity with the family as they continue their hunger strike.

Career Ear

I met with Claudine Adeyemi, founder of Career Ear, an app which connects young people with professionals to ask career-related questions.

Blackbird Bakery

I visited Blackbird Bakery during Streatham Food Festival to talk all things food and business with staff and try for myself some of the fantastic local food available on Streatham High Road.

Wandsworth Oasis

I visited Wandsworth Oasis, a great local charity and shop which raises money for people living with HIV. They do great work and are a great local business!

Streatham Wells school visit

I sat down with Year 5s at Streatham Wells school about my role as an MP and to answer their questions after meeting the Headteacher Louise.

Refugee Resettlement Schemes EDM

This Refugee Week I’ve added my name to Tim Farron MP’s motion to ensure that the UK fulfils our commitment to refugee resettlement and accept more child refugees fleeing violence over the next ten years.

Prompt Payment Code

I challenged the Government to make the Prompt Payment Code mandatory for large businesses to help and support SMEs who are worst affected by late payments.

Earnings threshold

I asked the Government if they will rethink their proposed earnings threshold that will impact on the ability to retain and attract NHS staff.

Social Integration APPG

I chaired a really interesting meeting of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Social Integration looking at generational divide and today the impact of technology on isolation and mental health.

Perfect Blend

I visited Perfect Blend in Streatham Hill to discuss the local economy and health of the High Road with manager Ben. One of our many great small businesses on the High Road.

Order Paper Take Over vote

I voted for a motion to take over the Order Paper to prevent a future Conservative PM from forcing through a No Deal Brexit against Parliament’s will, which was unfortunately defeated.
