What I do

Brixton

The Streatham constituency contains the southern part of Brixton. It has a longstanding reputation as a vibrant cultural and creative hub, and has also seen significant transformation and investment. Windrush Square is named after the Windrush generation – who settled in Brixton after arriving in the UK as it had the labour exchange which was closest to the accommodation provided to migrants in Clapham – and is home of the Black Cultural Archives.

Transport Public Meeting

Speaking at Streatham Action’s public meeting on local transport infrastructure including the appalling service from Southern Rail and Thameslink.

Small Business Saturday

Great to visit the Small Business Saturday HQ and catch-up with the team. Make sure you get involved with Small Business Saturday on 3rd December and support the amazing local small businesses in our community.

Ritzy Living Wage campaign

Really pleased to be supporting the Ritzy Living Wage campaign – my view is if you can afford it pay it! Today I met with a group of employees to talk about their campaign and how I can continue to support them.

Black Lives Matter

Great to meet DeRay Mckesson to talk about Black Lives Matter and the different challenges facing the black community in the US and here in the UK.

House of Commons - NHS Funding

I led a debate on the funding of the NHS following our withdrawal from the EU. Leave campaigners must be held to account for their key campaign pledge to put £350m extra per week into the health service.

APPG Social Integration - London Is Open conference

It was an honour to speak about my work as Chair of the APPG on Social Integration at the Mayor of London’s conference on social integration.

Remembrance Sunday

At the Remembrance Sunday service in Streatham this morning we remembered all those who fought and lost their lives for our country.

Camberwell Green Magistrates Court

I’ve written objecting to the proposal to close Camberwell Green Magistrates Court in Southwark following the closure of Lambeth County Court which served my constituents.

St Michael’s Fellowship

An honour to host a reception in the House of Commons to showcase the St Michael’s Fellowship – a Streatham-based charity which works with disadvantaged families in Lambeth and across London and the UK.

Home Affairs Select Committee – Report on antisemitism

Home Affairs Select Committee, of which I am a member, published our report on antisemitism in the UK. It paints a picture of rising antisemitism over the last few years which does not make for pleasant reading.

Black Cultural Archives

Always a pleasure to catch up with the Black Cultural Archives team on their latest projects and exhibitions.

Letter - Southern Rail

I’ve written to the Government seeking urgent clarification on their plans to transfer control of Southern Rail services to Transport for London – they can’t be allowed to backtrack on their commitment to this.
