What I do

Brixton

The Streatham constituency contains the southern part of Brixton. It has a longstanding reputation as a vibrant cultural and creative hub, and has also seen significant transformation and investment. Windrush Square is named after the Windrush generation – who settled in Brixton after arriving in the UK as it had the labour exchange which was closest to the accommodation provided to migrants in Clapham – and is home of the Black Cultural Archives.

Really interesting listening to Members of the UK Youth Parliament talk about their views on our current voting system and how we can reform it to ensure that all votes count equally.

Brixton Soup Kitchen

I popped by Brixton Soup Kitchen to say hi to the team and highlight the awesome work they are doing to help those who don’t have the means to afford to eat.

Big Kid Foundation

Really enjoyed talking to some of the Big Kid Foundation crew at the Black Cultural Archives this morning. They are a very important charity empowering our young people to fulfil their potential.

I led a Westminster Hall debate on the insidious practice of blacklisting which has brought shame on our construction industry. I called on the Government to hold a full public inquiry into this issue.

Putting my amendment to the Article 50 Bill which calls on the Prime Minister to honour the pledge made by Vote Leave campaigners – including Cabinet ministers – to give our NHS an extra £350m per week.

Crystal Palace FC Foundation

It was great to visit the Crystal Palace FC Foundation yesterday to see all the work they do and the future community outreach projects they have planned.

House of Commons - Article 50 Bill

Today the Government published their Article 50 Bill. I’m working with colleagues to ensure that the voice of the people is heard so that we get a deal that works for everyone.

Streatham Job Centre

Visited Streatham Job Centre today. A big thanks to the staff there for all the hard work they do to support people back into work.

APPG Social Integration - BBC Local Radio

Talking to BBC Radio about the APPG on Social Integration’s interim report on the integration of immigrants – we’re calling for a regional-led immigration system and more support for migrants to learn English.
