What I do

Brixton

The Streatham constituency contains the southern part of Brixton. It has a longstanding reputation as a vibrant cultural and creative hub, and has also seen significant transformation and investment. Windrush Square is named after the Windrush generation – who settled in Brixton after arriving in the UK as it had the labour exchange which was closest to the accommodation provided to migrants in Clapham – and is home of the Black Cultural Archives.

APPG Social Integration - Evidence Session

Really enjoyed chairing today’s APPG on Social Integration’s session with the Jo Cox Commission on Loneliness – looking at how we can bring different groups together.

House of Commons - King’s College Hospital Foundation Trust

For too long we have perpetuated the myth that we can have Scandinavian levels of public services on American levels of taxation. I’ve called on the Government to set up a cross-party convention to come up with a sustainable model for the whole NHS.

APPG Social Integration - Intergenerational connection report launched

Kicking off the launch of the APPG on Social Integration’s investigation into Intergenerational connection and divides by publishing our latest essay collection.

Sixth Form Conference

Incredible to see so many at the Sixth Form Conference in Westminster today. There were hundreds of politically engaged students and a wide range of questions on Yemen, human rights and Brexit.

Corpus Christi Catholic Primary School

Amazing Christmas Fair at Corpus Christi Primary School. So much hard work goes into it by the teachers and parents. This year they are fundraising for a new minibus.

Christmas Lights Switch-on

Always fun to turn on the Streatham Christmas lights and this year I got to meet the one and only Ted Reilly aka Johnny Carter from Eastenders!

House of Commons - EU Withdrawal Bill

In Parliament for the debate on the EU (Withdrawal) Bill. If it becomes clear that Brexit will cause real damage to the UK we should be able to keep an open mind – Brexit can be paused or reversed if the British people want.

Remembrance Sunday

Every year on Remembrance Sunday I lay a wreath at the War Memorial alongside over 60 local organisations and groups – it is always a very moving ceremony. This year over 600 people turned out.

Lambeth College

A real honour to officially opened the new Lambeth College site at Brixton Hill and get a tour of their new facilities.

House of Commons - European Economic Area

In a debate on the UK’s membership of the European Economic Area, I argued that staying in the Single Market is the principal way that we can retain the economic benefits of our membership of the EU.

EDM - 401 Award of the Elizabeth Tower Contract to Sir Robert McAlpine

I’ve tabled this Early Day Motion (EDM) calling on the Parliamentary Authorities to reconsider awarding the Big Ben refurbishment contract to Sir Robert McAlpine given their history of blacklisting.

House of Commons - Votes at 16

Today I will be in the House of Commons to support Jim McMahon MP’s Representation of the People Bill that will give 16 and 17-year-olds the right to vote.
